G405 - Generator MVAR Testing
|
 |
2 days - 1.3 Continuing Education Units Awarded
HPC Technical Services' "Generator MVAR Testing" Seminar deals with considerations and preparation for the preparation and conduct of FERC required MVAR testing. Very recently one of our engineers was involved in such a test at a Midwestern site. The testing was successful and one of the requests made was for HPC to develop and deliver a Seminar on this subject. We pride ourselves on listening to our customers. In this Seminar attention is given to preparation from a unit perspective as well as a grid perspective, safety, and data collection.
OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this Seminar the participant will be able to:
- Describe Volt-Ampere-Reactive, how they are generated, transmitted, and why.
- Discuss reactive load sharing between AC Generators
- Discuss the basis of the required MVAR testing.
- Discuss necessary plant operational considerations in planning MVAR testing.
- Describe how the MVAR test could have adverse affects on generation operation.
OUTLINE
- AC Power Generation: Reactive Power, Power Factor, Power Relationships, Losses Line Charging, Effect of VARs on current, Effect of VARs on voltage, Power Flow, Stability, Reactive Capability Curve
- Excitation Systems: Purpose, Fundamental Operation of Voltage Regulators, Volts/Hz Protection, Maximum Excitation Limit
- MVAR Test Considerations: Purpose of Test, Information Needed Regarding Plant Operations, Plant Reactive Loading, Impact upon Operating Equipment, Test Limitations, Test Procedures
