M205 - Mechanical Maintenance Skills

5 days - 3.2 Continuing Education Units Awarded

A Maintenance technician, to properly maintain equipment to high standards, must be proficient in the use of Precision Measuring Instruments, must know proper rigging techniques, must be familiar with valves and valve maintenance, and must have knowledge of rotating machinery alignment, It is the intent of this course to enhance these proficiencies.

Terminal Objective
The purpose of this course presentation is to familiarize the individual with the maintenance needed to ensure equipment reliability.

(Recommended Prerequisites - None)

Course Objectives:
At the completion of this course the participant will be able to:

Basic Rigging

  • Identify and describe those lifting devices and/or fixtures commonly used in an industrial facility.
  • Correctly choose the lifting equipment required for the safe and efficient lift of an assigned job task that involves a lifting procedure.
  • Visually inspect lifting devices used in the normal daily routine as they pertain to maintenance activities.

Precision Measuring Instruments

  • Select and use the proper precision measuring instruments for the assigned task
  • Accurately measure equipment parts to determine their continued usefulness or warranted replacement
  • Accurately set up, check and record the total indictor run out on a rotating element or shaft assembly
  • Make valued judgments about equipment condition based on mechanical operating clearances
  • Take and record mechanical sizes and conditions as they pertain to the manufacture of replacement parts
  • Properly care for and store precision measuring instruments thus ensuring their readiness for and ability to take the next set of accurate readings

Valve ID and Maintenance, Gaskets and Packing

  • Identify various valves and their functions
  • Perform maintenance of valves
  • Describe the factors that will cause a gasket not to seal properly
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for installing packing in valves and on rotating equipment
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for adjusting packing
  • List the advantages of mechanical seals
  • Explain how mechanical seals work

Rotating Equipment Alignment

  • Correctly align rotating equipment using several available alignment methods and procedures
  • Describe the negative effects of misalignment on equipment and associated parts
  • Inspect equipment foundations and related piping as they relate to equipment alignment
  • Describe and address both parallel and angular alignment concerns
